At the Friends of the St. Louis County Animal Shelter Foundation, we collaborate closely with Saint Louis County Animal Care & Control to invest in animal shelter initiatives that directly enhance the lives of animals in our care and bolster community outreach programs. Below are the current priority initiatives, including our veterinary suite expansion, where donor support will make an immediate and lasting impact.
Expanding our outdoor play yard space as part of our animal shelter initiatives will provide dogs with safe areas to exercise, decompress, and engage in enrichment activities. Many shelter dogs spend extended time waiting for adoption, and access to regular outdoor play significantly improves their physical health, behavior, and overall wellbeing. Additionally, these new play yards will enhance our community outreach programs by allowing staff and volunteers to rotate dogs more frequently, reduce kennel stress, and improve adoption readiness, all while supporting our veterinary suite expansion.
Saint Louis County Animal Care & Control often operates at or near capacity, especially during peak intake seasons. By expanding kennel space as part of their animal shelter initiatives, the shelter will be able to house animals more humanely and safely while reducing overcrowding. This project will also enhance community outreach programs by creating additional dog and cat housing areas designed with modern shelter standards that improve sanitation, reduce disease transmission, and provide animals with a calmer environment while they await adoption or reunification with their owners, alongside a veterinary suite expansion.
The veterinary suite is critical to the health and survival of animals entering the shelter. The expansion of the veterinary suite is a key part of our animal shelter initiatives, as it will allow veterinary staff to treat more animals efficiently and provide higher levels of care. This project will include additional surgical space, improved treatment areas, and upgraded equipment to support spay/neuter surgeries, emergency care, and routine medical treatments. By enhancing our veterinary suite, we will significantly improve the shelter’s ability to care for injured animals and strengthen our community outreach programs.
Community outreach programs play a crucial role in supporting animal shelter initiatives by keeping animals out of the shelter and promoting responsible pet ownership throughout Saint Louis County. Funding will be allocated to support various programs, including vaccine clinics, pet food assistance, educational programming, and community partnerships that help families maintain the health and safety of their pets. Additionally, these efforts aid in the veterinary suite expansion, reducing shelter intake, strengthening the human-animal bond, and ensuring that more pets can stay in loving homes.
Animals sometimes arrive injured or in urgent need of medical care. Through our animal shelter initiatives, the Emergency Medical Fund helps cover life-saving treatments, surgeries, and medications for these animals. This support is crucial, especially as we expand our veterinary suite through community outreach programs, ensuring that animals have the options they need for recovery.
